Travelling is not just about visiting popular tourist spots but also about being a part of the whole experience. One way to make your travel memories more vivid is to rediscover the beauty of listening to your surroundings through sound-walks. By actively listening to the sounds of a new place, you can create lasting memories that go beyond taking photos and videos.

Recording sounds can also be a great way to immerse yourself in the journey and preserve its essence. Our brain responds differently to images than to sounds, so field recording can make your travel experiences more immersive and memorable.

In the 1970s, Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer introduced the term sound-walks. This practice entailed listening while walking through an environment and has been adopted by artists, environmentalists, and travellers seeking a spiritual, cultural or community connection with the spaces they explore.

Sound-walks are happening globally, with artists and listeners using technology like apps, microphones, headphones, and recorders to guide them. With the use of smartphones, inaudible aspects of an environment are augmented.

A soundwalk is a slow-paced walk, usually in silence, where you pay attention to the environmental sounds surrounding you. You can start scanning the sounds you make with your body, like your footsteps or cloth rubbing when you move your arms and legs. Then, you can spread your listening in 360 degrees as far as possible. Just let yourself flow and concentrate on the ambience.

If you lose concentration, stop walking, tune in to something that calls your attention and continue walking. I plan stops before starting my walk, especially on specific landmarks I want to explore and field record. You can practice soundwalking for a few minutes or an entire day. The longer you practice, the more information you’ll get out of it.

Understanding the Best Time for Sound Walks in Nature

When planning your sound walk, note that early morning and late afternoon capture diverse natural sounds. Consider the weather’s impact on the soundscape and explore nature’s acoustic qualities at different times.

One of my favourite activities is listening to nature during the dawn and dusk chorus. This travel hack has given me free magical experiences from the waking hours of the day until the night. Everywhere I've gone, I have gifted myself with the most incredible concert nature features every day and every night.

During the dawn chorus, you can listen to birdsong and vocalizations before the first ray of light appears. Usually, 1 hour to 30 minutes before sunrise.

Listen to the dusk chorus from the exact location. This starts to happen 1 hour to 30 minutes before the sunset. If you book your stay at The Rock in Koh Samui, Thailand, you can listen to these sounds while you float in the ocean during the sunset.

Conclusion:

Sound-walks provide a distinct and engaging way to explore and experience the world around you while travelling. By utilizing your sense of hearing, you can discover hidden details and appreciate the atmosphere and textures of different places.

Sound-walking is often associated with field recording, which has become a way of using technology to enhance our listening practice and to explore the aural richness of the different environments around us. In my experience, combining active listening, field recording, and sound-walking has helped me connect with new places and their communities, cultures, and nature.

Since our brain stores images differently than sound, taste, and smell, recording and listening while travelling are unique ways of creating lasting memories and enhancing listening skills. It’s also a great way to stay in the present moment, allowing the mind and body to open to new experiences. Whether you’re a traveller looking to enhance your adventures, a content creator seeking new inspiration, or simply someone looking to make their travels more memorable, sound walks can be a valuable tool. So, turn on your mic, step outside, and allow the world’s sounds to guide you on a journey of discovery.

What is a soundwalk?

A soundwalk is a mindful and immersive experience of exploring and paying attention to the sounds in the environment. It involves walking at a slow, comfortable pace with intention, observing and deep listening to the various sounds around you. The term “soundwalk” was first used by the World Soundscape Project led by R.
Taking a sound walk in nature offers a much-needed break from the noise and chaos of daily life. It’s a chance to relax, unwind, and find inner peace and can have a soothing effect on our nervous system.

Immersing ourselves in natural soundscapes through sound walks not only helps us practice mindfulness, but also reduces stress and anxiety. Moreover, it reconnects us with nature and enables us to appreciate the diverse and beautiful soundscape it provides.

Physically, a sound walk can encourage us to be more active and engage in gentle exercise as we explore our surroundings. Walking is a low-impact form of exercise that can improve cardiovascular health, increase circulation, and boost energy levels.

Pro Tips: Finding Quiet Places for a Soundwalk

When planning a sound walk, choose a date and time when the natural environment is less crowded. Find a location away from busy roads, buildings, and other sources of noise. Consider noise pollution levels, including sounds from human activities and flights. Look for natural environments like parks, forests, or near water.

Deep Listening to our inner and outer world.

Deep listening traces its roots back to the pioneering work of Pauline Oliveros. By being fully present and attentive to the sounds around you, going beyond just hearing, deep listening is a practice of listening to all sounds with full attention. The aim is to focus on the experience of listening rather than the content of what is being heard. In this practice, natural or technological, intended or unintended, real, remembered or imaginary sounds are explored and can be used for relaxation, stress reduction, increased awareness and active listening. Even simple activities like soundwalks can become more enriching and fulfilling when you practice deep listening.

Sound and its many forms and activities, in addition to listening, form part of my lifestyle. Understanding what happens when you pay full attention to sounds is key to understanding ourselves, others, and the world around us. Listening can expand our creativity and awareness of our immediate soundscape. Only then we can understand all that’s going on.

As you walk or move through your day, listen to the sounds of your footsteps. How do they make you feel? Can you imagine a rhythm? Play with it!

What is Deep Listening?

Deep listening is a practice that involves attentive and empathetic listening, not just to sounds but also to one’s thoughts, body, and emotions, with full attention and openness. It fosters nonjudgmental communication and meaningful connections. By slowing down and being fully present, it cultivates curiosity and openness. Through this practice, we can genuinely connect with others on a profound level and bring about positive change in ourselves and worldwide communities.

Practices like Dr. Joe Dispenzas’ walking meditation go well with deep listening. My favourite take from Pauline Oliveros’s Sonic Meditations is “Walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.” This practice goes beyond surface-level listening, creating meaningful connections, fostering understanding, and promoting healing.

The Origin of Deep Listening – Pauline Oliveros

Renowned composer Pauline Oliveros played a vital role in pioneering deep listening techniques within the realm of music and sound. She founded The Deep Listening Institute to share this practice with as many people as possible worldwide. She applied it as a transformative practice in her own life and as a way to compose her music. Her skills as an accordion player and improviser greatly influenced her deep listening journey.

Pauline Oliveros

Pauline Oliveros was the driving force behind this movement. As a visionary artist, she understood that listening goes beyond mere auditory perception, evolving into a practice of receptivity and empathy. Allowing us to tune into the subtle nuances, emotions, and energies present in the soundscape of our lives.

Her legacy continues to inspire and provide new perspectives on the power of listening and healing. Through her long-time dedication, Oliveros created a space for individuals to connect with themselves and others through this practice. The Heart Chant is one of my favourite exercises as it creates sonic healing for everyone engaged in it.

Pauline Oliveros spent her life trying to get people to understand what listening really entitles, and this is why I admire her work and lifestyle so much. Her life philosophy was deep listening.

Deep Listening – A Historical Perspective

Travel back in time to the 1960s and 1970s, when deep listening emerged as a practice of profound and complete attention to sound. Influenced by the Vietnam War, San Francisco, and nonverbal communication, this transformative approach to listening took shape. It was not just about hearing; it was about truly understanding and connecting with the sounds of daily life, body language, and new perspectives.

Pioneers such as Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, and David Gamper demonstrate the powerful impact of this practice on personal growth and collective consciousness. The birth of deep listening marked a paradigm shift in how we perceive and engage with the world around us. It invites us to listen with our whole being, opening ourselves to a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

How Does Deep Listening Differ from Hearing?

Deep listening differs from hearing in that it requires actively engaging with the speaker or sound sources and being fully present in the moment.

When it comes to understanding the key differences between deep listening and hearing, it’s essential to recognize that it goes beyond just the physical act of perceiving sounds. While hearing is a passive process, deep listening requires active engagement, full attention, and receptivity. It involves not only listening to sounds but also being attuned to one’s own thoughts, body sensations, and emotions. It is a conscious and intentional practice that allows for profound connections, understanding, healing, and personal growth, while hearing involves perceiving sounds.

Deep Listening versus Active Listening – Key Differences

Deep and active listening are distinct skills. Active listening involves understanding and responding to someone’s communication, while deep listening is a meditative practice that goes beyond interpersonal communication.

Deep listening is multidimensional and involves listening to sounds, thoughts, and body sensations, as well as listening with imagination and openness: our footsteps, heartbeat, breath and voice and finding unusual melodies in a soundscape. Deep listening also involves listening to emotions, facilitating empathy and significant connections—answering simple questions to yourself like what sound fascinates you?

Cultivating both skills can help individuals develop well-rounded communication abilities and strengthen their connections with others.

Exercise: Deep Listening During a Meditative Walking

If you want to feel more connected, I suggest practicing deep listening while going on a soundwalk. This practice involves walking slowly with attention while immersing yourself in your surroundings, allowing you to explore the depths of your environment. It’s similar to a meditative soundwalk. It heightens your awareness of intricate sounds, rhythms, and textures that often go unnoticed.

Like a soundwalk, you are paying attention to the movement of your feet, the sensation of your body touching the ground beneath you and also the sounds that are being emitted. I recommend you start to slow down progressively and walk at a comfortable pace. Slowing down also helps to focus your attention on sound since we are not making as much noise with our body movement and our breath. Imagine it as a flow yoga practice, where instead of focusing only on your breath as you move, you also focus on the sounds, real and imaginary. In my experience, your intention in this practice is what matters. I applied it as a playfulness practice for relaxation and field recording.

Try answering this question while you move slowly through your chosen destination. What sound are you hearing now?

Conclusion

Deep listening is a practice that deepens our connection to the sounds, rhythms, and energies of our surroundings. It enhances our perception of nature, urban environments, and everyday sounds. By fostering empathy and understanding, it transforms our relationship with ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Deep listening is more than simply hearing sounds. It involves immersing ourselves fully in the present moment and embracing the richness of our soundscape. It can take many forms, like musical compositions, group meditations, and solo or group soundwalks. The practice originated with Pauline Oliveros, who believed that listening is an act of healing and transformation.

Take a moment to pause, silence your inner voice, and truly listen. By focusing on specific sounds and feeling them move through your body, you’ll gain a new perspective on the intricate power of sound. Learn how to do a soundwalk.

Soundscape is a term credited to Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, which refers to the acoustic environment of a specific area. In this blog, we will explore the meaning of a soundscape, its different applications, and the incredible benefits it brings to our lives.

What exactly is a soundscape?

A soundscape is a term first used to describe the combination of sounds in a particular location, including natural sounds like birds chirping, thunder clapping or crashing waves, as well as man-made sounds like traffic, human voices or music.

Definition and Origins of Soundscapes

Before we dive into the definition and origins of the soundscape, let’s take a moment to understand what it encompasses. A soundscape is not just a random collection of sounds but rather a composition of different auditory elements that come together to create a specific acoustic environment. Composer R. Murray Schafer emphasized the importance of actively listening to these sounds and understanding their impact on our perception of place. It is like a composition of a musical art piece, where different sounds are woven together to convey a sense of place and immerse the listener in different sonic experiences.

I recommend you listen to this field recording of the dawn chorus to experience it yourself.

Key Elements of a Soundscape

A soundscape consists of different sounds, each contributing to the overall composition. There are three key elements that make up a soundscape: geophony, biophony, and anthropophony.

Geophony refers to natural sounds, such as wind, water, and rain. These sounds are produced by natural elements of the environment and shape our perception of place. The sound of waves crashing on the shore, the rustling of leaves, or the gentle breeze of the wind all contribute to the geophony of a specific area.

Biophony, on the other hand, includes sounds produced by animal activity. Bird songs, animal vocalizations, and insect sounds are all examples of biophony. These sounds not only add to the natural environment but also play a crucial role in animal communication, mating, and survival.

Anthropophony refers to sounds created by human activity. Traffic noise, airplane bys, music, voices, and other sounds of human origin fall under anthropophony. In today’s urbanized world, anthropophony often dominates soundscapes, making it crucial to study and understand its impact on our perception of place. It has become harder and harder to find places where anthropogenic sounds are not present.

The composition of the soundscape depends on various factors, including the specific time, place, environmental factors, and even the physiological factors of the listener. It is these different sounds coming together that shape our auditory environment and create a sense of place.

The Role of Soundscapes in Acoustic Ecology

Now that we have a better understanding of what soundscape is, let’s explore its role in acoustic ecology. Acoustic ecology is the study of sound in relation to the environment, focusing on how sound affects our experiences and well-being.

Soundscape ecology can be defined as the examination of all sounds that arise from a particular environment and create unique acoustic patterns across various spatial and temporal scales. Instances of such sounds include those produced by living organisms (biophony), the physical elements of the environment (geophony), and humans (anthrophony).

The Importance of Preserving Natural Soundscapes (Biophony and Geophony)

Preserving natural soundscapes is vital for the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems. By maintaining the natural balance of sounds in an environment, we can safeguard the delicate web of life that exists within it. Animals rely on soundscapes for communication, mating rituals, and even their survival. Different species have evolved to depend on specific acoustic environments, and any disruption to these soundscapes can have profound effects on their well-being.

Apart from its impact on wildlife, preserving natural soundscapes also offers benefits to human beings. The sounds of nature provide a sense of tranquillity and relaxation, allowing us to connect with our surroundings and find solace in the busy world we live in.

The preservation of natural soundscapes is crucial for eco-acoustics research, which explores the relationship between sound and the environment. Studies conducted by experts like Bernie Krause and Michael Southworth have shown the importance of sound in understanding ecological health and the impact of environmental noise on various habitats.

Furthermore, soundscapes contribute to the aesthetic, cultural, and recreational value of natural areas. Whether it’s the gentle rustle of tree leaves, the soft trickling of a water stream, or the soothing sound of raindrops, these natural sounds add depth and richness to our experiences in nature. They inspire artists and musicians to incorporate them into their work, creating beautiful compositions that capture the essence of a particular acoustic environment.

Annea Lockwood – World Rhythms

Preserving natural soundscapes is an essential endeavour that ensures the harmony of both the natural world and our own well-being. It allows us to appreciate the marvels of nature while also protecting the delicate balance that sustains life on this planet.

Anthropogenic Sounds and Noise Pollution

Soundscapes are delicate ecosystems of sounds that can be negatively affected by noise pollution. The constant noise of busy streets or airplane bys, for example, can disrupt the natural harmony of a soundscape. This excessive noise pollution not only disturbs the tranquillity of an environment but can also have detrimental effects on our auditory perception.

Hearing loss and even damage to the tiny hair cells in our cochlea, which are responsible for transmitting sound signals to the brain, can be caused by exposure to high levels of noise pollution. Moreover, prolonged exposure to loud sounds can affect the shape of the bones in our middle ear, including the malleus, incus, and stapes, further contributing to auditory issues.

Understanding the concept of soundscapes and their importance can help us mitigate noise pollution and its adverse effects. By studying different soundscapes, we can analyze the impact of noise pollution and create awareness to encourage efforts to reduce it. Through social media and other platforms, we can educate people about the significance of preserving natural soundscapes and the benefits they offer.

Efforts to reduce noise pollution not only have a positive impact on our everyday lives but also contribute to the preservation of the unique and diverse acoustic environments that exist around us. By working together, we can help maintain the beauty and serenity of our natural soundscapes while minimizing the negative effects of noise pollution and even improving our mental and physical wellness.

Psychological Effects of Soundscapes

Listening to soundscape recordings has the power to induce a deep sense of relaxation and alleviate feelings of anxiety. These recordings, whether capturing the gentle sounds of raindrops in a bamboo forest or the calming sound of ocean waves, have a unique ability to transport us to a serene and peaceful state of mind. In addition to relaxation, soundscapes can also evoke memories and create a sense of nostalgia, connecting us to specific moments in our lives.

Furthermore, studies have suggested that exposure to soundscapes can improve cognitive function and creativity. The rich and diverse range of sounds within a soundscape can stimulate the brain, leading to enhanced problem-solving abilities and a boost in imaginative thinking. It’s as if the different elements of a soundscape act as a musical composition, activating various regions of the brain and fueling our creative endeavours.

Overall, soundscapes offer a myriad of psychological benefits. They have the power to create a sense of calm, peace, and tranquillity, allowing us to escape the environmental noise and find solace in the beauty of nature. So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or in need of a mental break, consider immersing yourself in a soundscape. It might just be the soothing therapy your mind craves.

1. Planning Your Soundwalk

Determine the type of soundwalk to take: There are many, so here’s a refresher on the types of soundwalks

Determine a purpose: To feel relaxed, to enter a meditative state, to engage with a community, to raise noise awareness, to share a sound journey with your kids, to explore a new place in your travels, etc. You get the point; purpose is vital.

Selecting a Location: Purpose and location go together; choose a site that offers a rich auditory experience for your purpose. When selecting a location, consider diverse settings and soundscapes, from the soothing sounds of nature to the vibrant urban symphony or even the architectural acoustics of a city. A soundwalk could be an opportunity to escape the cacophony of daily life and immerse in a rich auditory tapestry of the world around you. Tailor the choice to the group’s preferences, providing a captivating aural experience.

Determining the Route and Duration: Plan the route of your soundwalk, considering the desired duration and the features of the chosen location. A well-thought-out path ensures a structured and enjoyable sound walking experience.

Determine the tools: Using tools is optional. Here are some ideas for tools you could use during a soundwalk:

Pen or pencil and a notebook

Mobile phone for accessing GPS and maps

Mobile apps for bird identification

Mobile apps for plant identification

Field recording gear

Special microphones like hydrophones, contact mics or parabolic microphones

Sound level meter

2. Conducting Your Soundwalk

You should briefly introduce where you’ll be walking and take a few minutes to answer a few questions. If it’s a silent walk, let the participants walk silently and put the phones in silent mode.

2.1. Beginning the Soundwalk

Commence by setting the right atmosphere and explaining the purpose of the activity. Encourage participants to concentrate on the soundscape they hear.

2.2. Guiding the Walk

Guide the participants throughout the soundwalk, offering insights into the sounds they may encounter and encouraging mindfulness and focused listening. Prompt them to reflect on the subtleties of each sound experienced, fostering a deeper connection with their auditory environment.

Mapping out areas is key for a better experience.

2.3. Encouraging Reflection

Walk slowly and stop in areas that may call your attention. Don’t rush, listen!

Listen to the closest sound to you, like your footsteps and your breath, and listen for the sound furthest away from you. Try to listen to the sounds between the closest and most distant sounds in all directions. Stop, close your eyes, and guide yourself by sound, not sight.

Enjoy the intricate sounds around you!

Continue to walk and stop as you practice this.

3. Post-Walk Engagement

After the soundwalk, create a space for participants to reflect on their experiences. Pose open-ended questions like “How does this sound make you feel?” to stimulate contemplation and enrich their auditory understanding.

Facilitate discussions about the sounds encountered and their impact. Encourage participants to share their experiences, interpretations, and emotions evoked by the auditory journey.

When leading a soundwalk for kids, briefly introduce where you’ll be walking and encourage them to walk quietly so they can focus on the sounds around them. Use age-appropriate language to explain the purpose of the walk and get them excited for the adventure ahead!

Soundwalks for kids are a great way to spark their curiosity and imagination while also finding joy in the natural environment. It’s all about exploring big feelings and experiencing the world around them through sound. To make the experience even more engaging, selecting a location that kids can easily connect with is important. Parks with diverse wildlife can be fun and adventurous, or playgrounds with tunnels and other reflecting spaces can make kids eager for more.

Consider the attention span and energy levels of the age group involved. A shorter walk of 10 to 15 minutes would work well for your little ones, keeping them engaged and excited.

1. Beginning the Soundwalk with an Engaging Introduction for Kids

Using a checklist and starting with a simple and engaging introduction to help kids connect to the concept of a soundwalk. Use age-appropriate language and visuals to explain the purpose of the walk, emphasizing on finding joy when listening to the soothing sounds around them.

To make it more exciting, frame it as a sound explorer adventure or do a scavenger hunt for hidden sound signals and bird songs using apps to identify bird calls.

Another exciting idea is to incorporate a field recording listening walk and let participants hear an amplified aural reality through mics and headphones.

2. Guiding the Walk for Kids

Guiding a sound walk for children involves interactive engagement. Pose questions like “Can you imitate the sound of a bird using your voice?”. Allow them to be sound discoverers, exploring and identifying the ambient sounds they hear. This interaction can transform the experience into an exciting auditory game for children.

3. Post-Walk Reflection Activities for Kids

Kids connect with their surroundings through sound, promoting mental health and creativity. After the walk, encourage them to share their experiences and reflect on what they heard and how it made them feel. Foster their creativity by suggesting they can draw, colour, or use their voice to represent any other sounds they remember.

Conclusion: How to Conduct a Soundwalk for All Ages

What is a Soundwalk (or Sound Walk)?

To truly grasp the essence of a soundwalk, imagine a stroll through your usual route but with a heightened sense of awareness toward the auditory environment. A sound walk is precisely an intentional and mindful practice of exploring the sonic landscape around you. It’s an act of engaging with the often-overlooked symphony that envelops our daily lives. Such a walk allows us to rediscover the familiar world through a new sensory lens by focusing on the sounds that usually escape our everyday attention. For example, birds chirping in the morning outside your window, the soft sound of rain falling on the grass, and the crunchy textures of sand as you stroll down a beach.

Hidelgard Westerkamp – Presentation on Sound Walks

The core idea of a soundwalk is listening to our surroundings with attention or deep listening, a term popularized by the composer Pauline Oliveros. Deep listening involves attentive and open receptivity to sound, expanding one’s perception of auditory phenomena. Through deep listening during a sound walk, one can connect with one’s surroundings, identifying layers of sound signals and their origins and gaining insights into the complexity and beauty of the sonic world.

History and Creator of Soundwalks

The roots of the soundwalk concept can be traced back to the work of R. Murray Schafer, a Canadian composer and environmentalist. Schafer, known for founding The World Soundscape Project in the late 1960s, is credited with creating the term “soundwalk” in the early 1970s. His pioneering efforts in the field of acoustic ecology aimed to raise awareness about the auditory environment and its preservation. Schafer’s seminal book, “The Tuning of the World,” laid the foundation for understanding acoustic ecology and exploring the concept of “soundscape” and its significance in our lives.

Key members of the World Soundscape Project include Barry Truax and Hildegard Westerkamp. Westerkamp is an important figure in the world of soundwalks, soundscapes and acoustic ecology. Her involvement in The World Soundscape Project significantly influenced her perception of sound and its role in our lives. Her keen awareness of noise issues and the acoustic environment reshaped her approach to music and sound. Westercamp was essential in founding the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, uniting global advocates for soundscapes.

How Does a Soundwalk Work?

At its core, a soundwalk involves moving through a place with the deliberate intent to listen and observe the sounds that inhabit the space. It transcends mere hearing; it’s about intentionally going on a listening walk. When embarking on a soundwalk, one consciously opens their auditory senses, allowing the sounds to guide the journey.

A soundwalk is not confined to a specific type of habitat; it could be a walk through an urban landscape, a hike through a forest, a stroll along a beach at night, or even an exploration of an indoor space, including your own home. The key to conducting a soundwalk in a group or by yourself is to consciously engage with the auditory space, to pause and appreciate the subtle, often overlooked sounds that weave the fabric of our daily lives.

App-guided soundwalks or audio walks are designed to enhance the way people experience and interact with their surroundings. Users are guided through a curated audio journey as they explore a particular location, such as a park, city, cultural site, or even an underwater location. In apps like Echoes and the app from Ellen Reid Soundwalk, users can move through the chosen route; the app uses GPS to track their location and synchronize the audio content accordingly.

These walks can be theme-based, exploring sounds related to a cultural event, architectural features, historical sites, or even a particular period. The audio content can include storytelling, music, historical context, nature sounds, or any combination tailored to the specific location and theme.

The Purpose of a Soundwalk

The purpose of a soundwalk is multifaceted, encompassing various objectives aimed at fostering a deeper connection with the sonic space:

Soundwalks allow individuals to connect with the environment on a sensory level, promoting a stronger bond with the surrounding auditory landscape. It’s a way to understand and appreciate the place we inhabit.

By actively listening and reflecting on the sounds encountered during a soundwalk, participants develop an awareness of the auditory elements that shape their lives. This newfound awareness can lead to a more conscious and mindful engagement with sound in daily routines.

One of the fundamental purposes of a soundwalk is to encourage active listening. Participants cultivate deep listening skills by focusing on the auditory space, enhancing their overall perception of sound.

Soundwalks provide an opportunity to experience the uniqueness of a place through its sounds. It’s about understanding how the soundscape contributes to the identity and character of a particular location. For further understanding of what a soundscape is, follow my blog post on What is a Soundscape: Benefits and Applications Explained.

For artists, sound walking serves as a well of inspiration, influencing their creative practices. The auditory experiences during a walk can find expression in various forms of art – music, poetry, painting, augmented reality and more.

Platforms like Walk Listen Create serve as a hub for diverse audio content, ranging from guided tours to public art sound pieces. Individuals can explore and appreciate the different perspectives and localities captured through these recordings, fostering a sense of collective appreciation for the world’s sonic richness.

Conclusion: Exploring the World of Sound Walks

In a world that’s often dominated by visual stimulation, soundwalks create a unique and enriching way to perceive and connect with the world through our auditory senses. They encourage us to step away from the noise of our daily lives, to slow down and listen deeply to the sounds surrounding us. Whether it’s the rhythmic pulse of a city soundscape or the gentle whispers of a forest, a soundwalk allows us to immerse ourselves in the acoustic world, revealing its beauty and complexity.

If you’re a nature lover like me, you know how rejuvenating it can be to go on soundwalks near the ocean or inside forests. But what if you can’t access these places all the time? That’s where The Happy Listening Project comes in! I’ve created a series of soundscapes in podcast form that you can listen to from the comfort of your own home. It’s the next best thing to being there!
